Theme: The Sun Touches Everything - Celebrating the Influence of the Sun

The NASA International Space Apps Challenge, the world's largest hackathon, is back! This year, Mountain View is teaming up with NASA Ames Research Center to host an exhilarating event celebrating the theme "The Sun Touches Everything." Mark your calendars for October 5th and 6th, 2024, and join us in exploring the vast influence of the Sun on our lives and beyond.

Why Join?

A Prestigious and Inclusive Event:
The NASA Space Apps Challenge, formerly run by NASA's Office of the Chief Information Officer, is now part of NASA's Science Mission Directorate and the Open Government Initiative founded under President Barack Obama. It fulfills the United States’ commitments to the Open Government Partnership. Managed by the NASA Science Mission Directorate’s Earth Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC, and implemented by Booz Allen Hamilton, Mindgrub, and SecondMuse, this hackathon collaborates with leading Space Agencies globally.

Dynamic and Inclusive Participation:
Our dynamic Local Lead, Martina Dimoska, and her dedicated team are committed to inclusivity, offering a hybrid model for participation. Whether you join us on-site at NASA Ames or virtually from anywhere in the world, you’ll experience a seamless, engaging event.

On-Site Participation: Open to almost all foreign nationals and international students if they submit the documentation on time.
Online Participation: Open to global participants, featuring live streams and interactive online activities.

Diverse and Creative Teams:
No matter your background, there’s a place for you at the Space Apps Challenge! We welcome everyone from artists, influencers, creatives, and cooks to designers, doctors, lawyers, and STEM enthusiasts. Show off your skills in areas like robotics, software, education, and medicine. Our goal is to empower your curiosity and harness the power of your ideas.

Collaborative and Supportive Community:
Join a diverse community that values learning from one another. Whether you’re a software engineer, designer, writer, or artist, your contributions are valued. We focus on the feasibility of ideas, so prototypes with basic functionality are encouraged.

Event Highlights

Local and Global Recognition: Mountain View will have local winners, with select projects nominated for global judging. In 2022, Cleveland secured a Global Winner, Team Statflock, in the category 'Best Use of Data.'
Freestyle Projects: In addition to specific challenges, you can undertake any space-related project. While these won't be eligible for global judging, we will promote them widely. We're particularly interested in projects related to art, advanced visualization, and open-source 3D engines.

Innovative Solutions and Entrepreneurship:
Using open data from NASA and our 11 partner Space Agencies, participants this year tackled 30 challenges and produced 5,556 projects addressing Earth and Space Problems. These solutions have been utilized within local communities, had a global impact, and were used by Agencies and Companies. There is also a significant entrepreneurship component, where teams pitch their solutions to business angels, founders, and VC investors, with the potential to found a novel start-up.
